The Average Brit Has Seen Only A Third Of Great Britain

4th August 2017

The average Brit has seen just 32 percent of Great Britain, according to new research.

Researchers commissioned by Railcard*, which offers a third off train travel, looked at the areas of Great Britain that Brits have and haven’t visited - and found most of us have seen less than a third of the country we live in.

A red-faced 42 percent admitted they felt embarrassed about how little of the country they’ve seen, while 88 percent said they would like to know more about the rich tapestry and history of Britain.

Jyoti Bird, Marketing Director at the Rail Delivery Group, the body which runs the Railcard portfolio, said “In excess of 35 million international tourists visited Britain in 2016, yet this latest research reveals that much of the country remains largely unexplored by Brits themselves.

“With so much focus on foreign holidays at this time of year it can be easy to forget the stand-out destinations available on people’s doorsteps. Railcards provide a third off train travel making it easier than ever to get out and about and explore Britain for less.”

According to the Railcard study, 43 percent have never been to the city of Newcastle, while 42 percent are yet to visit Cambridge.

A further 41 percent have never visited the Welsh capital Cardiff while 34 percent have not visited the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.

Incredibly, 15 percent of Brits have not even ventured to London - and 37 percent have not been to the Roman Spa town of Bath, according to the poll of 1,500 Brits.

The survey shows 90 percent of us have been meaning to visit parts of Great Britain but have “never got around to it”.

However, 57 percent have been to Paris, while four in ten have visited Barcelona and Amsterdam.

Jyoti added: “Our figures reveal that 90 percent of us mean to visit more of the country we live in. With the summer holidays now underway Railcard offers a third off rail fares giving people the perfect excuse to explore the best that Britain has to offer.”

While a third of Brits have visited Mallorca, one in ten of us have never been to some of the UK’s most famous beach locations. Only 18 percent of us have visited the Gower Peninsular in Wales home to Rhossili Bay, which was recently ranked amongst the world’s top ten beaches, challenging beaches in Hawaii, French Polynesia and the British Virgin Islands.

Jyoti said: “We’re all living in the moment a lot more and it’s reassuring to know that world-class destinations are just a train ride away. With our range of Railcards we’re aiming to ensure we can all see more of Britain for less.”

Half of Britons have not ventured to the Brecon Beacons, while another 49 percent have not been to the Highlands.

However, despite our lack of travel around Britain, 71 percent of Brits still think Great Britain is the best place in the world.

To encourage more people to get out and about and explore Great Britain, the Rail Delivery Group will be offering 10 per cent off one year Railcards when purchased online at railcard.co.uk during the summer months.
